Student Spotlight: Henry Lyons


Henry is a cello student of Christina Gentzsch, cello instructor and co-owner of Dynamic Music Studios in Coralville, IA.


Q: Why did you decide to start cello lessons?

A: I decided to start cello lessons to improve my skills and become a better cellist. 


Q: How long have you been taking cello lessons?

A: I have been taking cello lessons for about a year and a half. 


Q: Do you play any other musical instruments?

A: Yes, I used to play the viola, but I switched over to the cello. I found that the cello resonates more with my musical preferences.


Q: How often do you practice the cello?

A: I practice the cello every day! 


Q: What is one of your favorite techniques or skills you have learned on the cello so far?

A: One of my favorite things I’ve learned so far is shifting to new positions. This technique has opened up a whole new range of possibilities on the cello.


Q: What advice do you have for other musicians learning the cello?

A: My advice for other musicians studying the cello is to practice every day. If you can’t manage daily practice, try to practice for longer periods when you can to make up for it.


Q: What do you enjoy most about your cello lessons?

A: I enjoy getting personalized advice and assistance during my cello lessons. It helps me ensure that I’m playing correctly and making progress.


Q: What do you like about taking lessons at Dynamic Music Studios?

A: I love the welcoming atmosphere at Dynamic Music Studios, especially the beautiful decorations. It’s also fun when Ginger, the studio dog, makes an appearance.


Q: What are your personal goals for learning the cello?

A: My main goal while learning the cello is to continuously improve my playing ability. I strive to get better with each practice session and lesson.


Q: What is your favorite musical piece, orchestral work, or artist?

A: My favorite musical piece is "Cornfield Chase" by Hans Zimmer from the Interstellar soundtrack. 


Q: Do you have any hobbies besides playing the cello?

A: Yes, I enjoy playing video games. My favorite game is Minecraft, which I find to be a great creative outlet.
